Education

Our Education Team is devoted to increasing the availability and skill level of human resources for the US precision custom manufacturing industry. With membership you will have access to a number of resources designed to inform and educate.

Robotics
NTMA is the Founding Sponsor of an exciting educational program that provides unlimited career awareness experiences in advanced manufacturing technology for students from middle school through college age. The approach has three components: a robotics curriculum based on national standards, teacher training workshops, and competitive events where students showcase their custom built machines and compete for top honors.

National Apprentice Program

Every Fall since 1973, our local chapters have hosted competitive events with the Regional Champions invited to a national runoff the following Spring. Besides tools, prizes, and trophies, the participants (and their sponsor companies) are vying for bragging rights as the best machinist trainees from among several hundred graduates of NTMA programs across the US.

NIMS
The NTMA along with the major trade associations in the industry - the Association for Manufacturing Technology, the American Machine Tool Builder Association, the Precision Machine Products Association, the Precision Metalforming Association, and the Tooling and Manufacturing Association - have invested over $7.5 million in private funds for the development of the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) standards and its credentials. The NTMA contributes annually to sustain NIMS operations and are committed to the upgrading and maintenance of the standards.

NTMA Training Centers
NTMA Chapters maintain collaborative relationships with community colleges and technical schools around the US to provide skilled training programs.

6S Excellence Award Program
The 6S Excellence Award program was developed by the NTMA Manufacturing Technology Team with the help of GF Agie Charmilles chairman Harry Moser as a way to recognize shops that employ higher standards of cleanliness and atmosphere. The NTMA 6S Award is open to all companies; you are invited to submit a 6S application together with an audit and photos, video or peer review, documenting each element.
